Abstract

Implementors of AD face a critical question: at which level of abstraction
should AD be applied. From source, over compiler intermediate representations,
to machine code. Each option shapes the design opportunities, what features and
capabilities we get for free, and what problems we have to solve. Each
abstraction level allows for a working AD tool, and this talk will explore this
choice in Tapenade, ForwardDiff.jl, and various Enzyme implementations for both
Julia and Fortran.
