Star Coloring Graphs Induced by Stencils

Abstract

Goldfarb and Toint provide a method for finding distance-2 and acyclic colorings
of graphs induced by stencils on grids. However, for direct recovery of a
Hessian matrix, a star coloring is needed. We present some results for the star
chromatic numbers of graphs induced by star and box stencils on 2-d and 3-d
grids.
